Exterior Cavity-Wall Applications - The Construction PhaseProgram number AIA703Course DescriptionThe third section of the Cavity Wall course focuses in on the construction process for spray-applied polyurethane foam (SPF) and A/V membrane barrier systems for high-performance cavity-wall building enclosures. This targets the construction team, but may provide insights to the design team regarding buildability and controlling construction costs. Essentially, this segment starts with an Air Barriers 101 overview and an introduction to SPF for members of the construction teams not familiar with these systems. Sequencing, access, environmental requirements, and minimizing conflicts between related trades are then discussed. The means of keeping envelope construction costs down by maximizing production rates and reducing wasted material are demonstrated using case studies. Finally, an introduction to what the building envelope trades should expect in terms of commissioning responsibilities and what and how quality assurance testing will be done during the construction process to assure compliance is included.
This segment of the three-hour course qualifies for a one-hour continuing education credit and qualifies for Health, Safety, and Welfare credit. Depending on the number of questions, this program typically takes from 1 to 1-1/2 hours to complete.
